Amen!

REFLECTION: Two Sundays ago (August 21), we heard how Jesus told us to enter the narrow door in order to receive salvation. This means that in following him, we have to be ready to face every challenge in life because the road to discipleship is not always easy. Today in the Gospel (Luke 14:25-33), he reminds us the most essential need in that call to discipleship: himself. “Whoever loves his father or mother more over me cannot be my disciple.” “Whoever does not take up his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” These two statements are somehow very confusing to us. But if we analyze them, there is a deeper meaning on how we are to know him. “Over me” is a simple phrase that means that we are to love and adore the Lord above all things and in this case thank him that he gave us loving and caring parents to guard us, nurture us, and teach us all the right values for our future development. Now why are we obliged to carry our daily crosses in life? Because Christ died on the Cross out of his love and the Father’s love and will for us that we may reject sin, yet that we may learn how to suffer not as a punishment, but as the glory of enduring one’s pain with faith and perseverance. By these things, we show that we are truly disciples of the Lord, always trusting on him and taking every step and challenge that we meet each day. However, it’s not all the time that we should rely on him for our help and in other cases not doing anything or having no plan in our lives. Jesus mentioned that a man would not just build a tower without sitting down and calculating if he has strong foundation and resources for it. He also mentioned that a king would not just command 10,000 soldiers to fight 20,000 soldiers of the opposing team, rather this ruler would send a peace delegation to settle the matters with the opponent. We are all obliged to make every decision of our lives. We must plan very well on how we should manifest our lives in this world because they are temporary, but they need to be lived to the fullest. The famous Mosaic prayer tells us in our Responsorial Psalm today: “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart” (Psalm 90:12). And in all our daily routines and activities, we must ask the Lord for guidance in doing them and in obeying his will. So as we journey down this road, may we always acknowledge the Lord as we strive to follow him daily in making decisions, planning our lives, and enduring our trials and sufferings of this world with faith and perseverance. Let me end my Reflection with this famous quote from unknown: “Do your best, and God will do the rest.”

REFLECTION
Lucas 14, 25-33

This gospel Luke 14, 25-33 mirrored the gospel Luke 13: 22-30 which refers to God Salvation of mankind. There is very narrow and rough road ahead we must undergo to become God disciple. It will mean lot of sacrifices that included leaving behind enormous wealth and even set aside the love of personal belonging and family making God the most and first love above all.

For God we learn to suffer not as a punishment but enduring glory of faith and perseverance. It means we are the true disciple of God. Yet, loving God we shall also plan the path of our lives according to His Disciplinary well, we must move forward according to it.

Building a house we must plan how it can be completed and find where to get the resources and make it realizes. Even going to war it should be planned. The leader must think many times whether war should proceed or plan a peaceful means.

Like the dispute between China and Philippines teeth for a teeth does not bear good results but destruction to mankind and environment. War is not a solution but many lives will be devastated including living things. And no lives will exist. Peace talk is the best as God will arrange the future.

In the gospel reading it tells all about discipleship. It’s about trusting God and dying in all of our personal desires, it could be leaving a family and denying ourselves in everything that we love to do. And this teaches us a pure sacrifice rather than a punishment. Surrendering all that we have and all that we do, and all that we are in the name of Jesus pretty not easy decisions to all of us, it is literally a dead end of our life here on earth but thinking of a great and unfathomable rewards that awaits in His promised glory in heaven is equally great inspiration. Looks like so easy said than done! Honestly, while still in the process of nurturing my Christian Catholic faith I pray fervently that I may come into term that life here on earth is but a split second in God’s times table. God knows how I hurdled the daily obstacle to be worthy of this calling to discipleship.
