Amen!

REFLECTION: In our catechism, when we say “sin”, it is a deliberate act with full knowledge and consent that is against others and God’s will. We know a sin is mortal when the act is grave and the consent is fully known, and a sin is venial when it the act is not so grave. But there are two other types of sin that our Church teaches: the sin of commission and the sin of omission. And our Readings for today will explain us these concepts.

1.) SIN OF COMMISSION. In the First Reading (Amos 6:1a, 4-7), Amos condemns the act of social injustice shown by the rich people of the Northern Kingdom (Israel). There is abundance of resources and money at that time, and these rich people would spend and enjoy in themselves. However they are also belittling the poor by selling them for money and taking what these lowly ones only have. So God tells Amos that they will be the first ones to be exiled by the Assyrians. That is why sin of commission refers to doing an act that you think it may be right, but it is not right for others and a sin against the will of God. For instance, the rich people of Israel neglected the poor by making money out of them and trampling them underfoot.

2.) SIN OF OMISSION. In the Gospel (Luke 16:19-31), Jesus presents a parable to the Pharisees who love money so much. There is this rich man who had fine clothes and plentiful feasts, also known in Latin as “Dives”. There is also a poor beggar named Lazarus who would eat the scraps under the table of the rich man. So Lazarus died and was comforted in heaven, while the rich man died and was tormented in flames. No matter how the rich man persuaded Fr. Abraham to spare him from being tormented by sending Lazarus into his house to enjoy his feasts, it is already the end of his life on earth because the poor beggar is now comforted. That is why the sin of omission refers to doing an act that you know that it is right according to God’s will, but you fail to do it. For instance, the rich man has every rich blessing the Lord gave him, but he failed to share it with Lazarus.

My dear brothers and sisters, sin does not only come in the gravity of an action, but it also comes in whether we fail to do what is the right thing (omission) and we prefer to do what we think is right, but in reality it is wrong (commission). Do we need to listen to the contemporary figures of Amos to reach out to the Lazaruses of our lives who are in dire need? Yes they are being taken cared for the by the Church, charitable organizations, National Government, NGOs, and LGUs, but we also have to do our part in reaching out to these people living in poverty and also those who are living ordinarily but experience at lot of problems, trials, and sufferings in their life. That is why Pope Francis’ exhortation for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is not only applicable to this time, but also extended even when the great year has already finished. So as we journey down this road, may we show the value of mercy not injustice towards our neighbors, thus doing what Saint Paul tells us in the Second Reading (1 Timothy 6:11-16): “To keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Cf. v. 14).
