Patnubay sa Misa
Bilang mga disipulo ng Panginoon, nakatalaga tayo sa kung ano ang totoo, tapat, mabuti o kapuri-puri. Sa harap ng maraming kahirapang kaugnay nito, hilingin natin ang tulong ng Panginoon at manalanging:
Panginoon, gabayan mo kami!
Nawa manatiling matatag ang Simbahan sa pagpapahayag at pagtatanggol sa katotohanan ng Ebanghelyo sa harap man ng panganib na mawalan ng kaibigan at mga pribilehiyo. Manalangin tayo!
Nawa lahat ng ating mga pinuno ay magbigay tuwina ng halimbawa ng tapang sa paninin- digan sa katotohanan, katapatan, at katuwiran. Manalangin tayo!
Nawa ikintal ng lahat ng magulang, guro, at mamamahayag sa ating kabataan ang tapat na pagpapahalaga sa Kahariang ipinangangaral ni Kristo. Manalangin tayo!
Nawa ang ating kabataan ay maganyak na mangakong sumunod sa turo ng Simbahan, nang di napatatangay sa himok ng mga paganong pamumuhay sa ating lipunan. Manalangin tayo!
Nawa sa ating pamayanan, walang sinumang matukso ng anumang salungat sa mga pagpapahalaga ng Ebanghelyo, kahit na nga ito’y waring kaakit-akit, magaa’ t madali. Manalangin

Panginoong Hesus, maaaring dahil sa katapatan sa iyong mga pagpapahalaga at halimbawa, makabangga namin ang ibang may kasalungat na paninindigan. Bigyan mo kami ng kailangan naming tapang upang tumulad kami sa iyong katapatan at maka- bahagi sa iyong kaluwalhatian magpakailanman. Amen!

PAGNINILAY: Sa ating Unang Pagbasa (Jeremias 38:4-6, 8-10), inihatol ng mga prinsipe at pinuno ng Israel at Juda si Propetang Jeremias ng kamatayan dahil hindi sila naniniwala na ang kanyang mensahe ay galing sa Diyos. Kaya binigyan sila ng awtoridad ng hari na maghatol sa kanya, at tinapon nila ang propeta sa isang balon puno ng putik. Binalitaan nito ni Ebedmelec kay Haring Zedekias dahil alam niyang mamatay si Jeremias kapag siya’y lumubog sa putik. Kaya pinayagan siya ng hari na kumuha ng tatlong lalaki upang iahon ang propeta mula sa balon. Si Propetang Jeremias ay sumsagisag sa Panginoong Hesus na nagdurusa upang tayo’y iligtas. Sa ating Ebanghelyo (Lucas 12:49-53), sinabi ni Hesus na siya’y naparito hindi para sa kapayapaan, kundi para maghati-hati. Mukhang nakakatakot ang kanyang mga salita. Pero ang nais niyang ipahatid sa atin ay isang babala kung hindi natin tatanggapin ang kanyang mga salita. Dahil sa kanyang dakilang pagdurusa, tayo’y naniniwala na tunay na sa Ama nagmula ang kanyang mensahe ng pagliligtas. Kaya nga kung hindi tayo tapat sa kanyang mga turo, magkakaroon tayo ng mga problema sa ating buhay. Kaya tayo’y inaanyayahan na magkaroon ng pananampalatayang nakatuon sa kanya. Ang bawat pagdarasal, pagsisimba, at pagdedebosyon natin ay kailangang isabuhay sa hindi paggawa ng masama, maging mabuting tao sa iba, at pagsunod sa kalooban ng Diyos. Sa ating paglalakbay sa daang ito, nawa’y maging matatag ang ating pananampalataya sa Panginoon sa isip, salita, at gawa, lalong-lalo sa gitna ng mga problema ng buhay.
REFLECTION: The liturgy for this Sunday focuses on the firmness of faith in the midst of opposition and persecution. Jeremiah in the First Reading is one of the notable Old Testament prophets to have receive many persecutions, insults, and condemnations from the priests, princes, and kings of Judah. We hear in the Reading how they plotted to put him to death by throwing him into the cistern, because Jeremiah has been preaching to the people of Judah about turning away from their wickedness and starting to become faithful towards the Lord. They throw him into a cistern for him to starve of hunger and thirst. However, we hear that a court official named Ebed-melech to be merciful towards the prophet who cannot die of famine, which is why Jeremiah has been hoisted up from the well. And the example of Jeremiah sees a figure, that despite doubting his youthfulness, he becomes a strong figure in the midst of opposition and those attempting to silence him from speaking the truth about the law of the Lord.
The Gospel Reading is another exhortation from the Lord Jesus about his mission to set the world ablaze by fire. The fire symbolizes the Holy Spirit, whom shall rekindle the world with the things of God, especially the mere truth that God continues to love everyone, and wills that everyone become faithful to him in order that they may attain salvation. And this is also the call of witnesses who speak in behalf of Christ, that they be messengers of the truth. However we know especially when Christ once commissioned his disciples to preach the Good News of the Kingdom, they have faced different forms of objection, inhospitality, and even attempted murder. This is why Jesus says in the Gospel that he has not come to bring peace, but division, for family members will be divided against each other. It is not the desire of Christ that families become divided, but that the problem arises when one member of the family, especially a member of a certain group or community, suddenly embraces the worldly desires of evil. And so there comes those people who side to stand by things that seem easy, despite the fact that they are sinful in the eyes of God. Jesus is that figure like Jeremiah who has become the bulwark of opposition against the hypocrisies of the Jewish leaders and the oppressions done against the fellow ordinary Jews. He knows the risk of preaching about the truth and about turning away from evil, even if it means being persecuted and questioned. Many times the Gospels narrate how these leaders plotted to have him killed, but because of the influence of the crowd who became his followers, they could not do so because the people have found in Christ a prophet of God, while many of them have believed that he was the Messiah. Indeed Jesus underwent his Passion and Death, a figure of an innocent Lamb who did not deserve death, but decided to accept it not because he wanted to be quiet, but that he might carry out the will of the Father by saving us from sin and showing us the greatest example of how the Father always loved us, and never gave up on us despite our shortcomings, weaknesses, and errors in life.
The Letter to the Hebrews in the Second Reading reminds us of the example of holy men and women who are standing as a great cloud of witnesses, that we too may follow in their footsteps and preach with whole courage and firmness the message of the Good News, even if it means proclaiming the hardcore truth that evil is never ever tolerated by the Lord. For indeed the Saints both martyred and non-martyred each in their way suffered persecutions not just from pagan authorities, but also from fellow family members and friends who mock them and opposed them of being Christian believers. But their legacies live on, and they inspire many Catholic Christians to live their example in striving holiness even in the simple acts of goodness, no matter what risk it entails, especially in the midst of opposition. We too live in a world wherein God becomes a subject of mockery and of less importance to people. Nowadays it has been a culture to call you out and insult you for being a true standout witness of the faith, even those wailing at you saying that your personality and spirituality are outdated. Moreover, we live in a digital age where social media is used a toxic tool to mock others for standing strongly to the truth and witnessing firmly to the faith.
However, the Readings today give us three comforting and strong reminders whenever we face all these challenges:
1.) Always stand to what is right even in the midst of oppositions.
2.) Do not compromise evil and good, for the Lord never tolerates evil.
3.) Continue to carry out the mission that God has entrusted to you.
