UNANG PAGBASA
Ezekiel 47, 1-2. 8-9. 12
Pagbasa mula sa aklat ni propeta Ezekiel
Noong mga araw na iyon, bumalik kami ng anghel sa pintuan ng templo. Sa ilalim nito’y may agos ng tubig papunta sa silangan. Ang templo’y paharap sa silangan. Ito’y nagmumula sa gawing timog na bahagi ng templo, sa gawing timog ng altar. Lumabas kami sa pintuan sa gawing hilaga at iniligid niya ako papalabas sa pintuan sa gawing silangan. Doon ay may mahinang agos ng tubig mula sa gawing timog ng hagdanan.
Sinabi niya sa akin, “Ang tubig na ito ay papunta sa dakong silangan, hanggang Dagat na Patay, malilinis ang tubig nito. Lahat ng lugar na abutin nito ay magkakaroon ng buhay. Sa magkabilang pampang ng ilog ay tutubo ang sari-saring punongkahoy na makakain ang bunga. Hindi malalanta ang mga dahon nito ni mawawalan ng bunga pagkat ang didilig dito ay ang tubig na umaagos mula sa templo; ito ay patuloy na mamumunga sa buong taon. Ang bunga nito ay pagkain, at gamot naman ang mga dahon.”

Ang Diyos ang lakas natin at kanlungan,
at handang saklolo kung may kaguluhan;

1 Corinto 3, 9k-11. 16-17
Pagbasa mula sa unang sulat ni Apostol San Pablo sa mga taga-Corinto
Mga kapatid, kayo ang gusali ng Diyos. Ayon sa kaloob ng Diyos sa akin, ako ang naglagay ng pundasyon, bilang mahusay na tagapagtayo. Iba naman ang nagpapatuloy ng pagtatayo na gusali. Ngunit maging maingat ang bawat nagtatayo, sapagkat wala nang ibang pundasyon na maaaring ilagay liban sa nailagay na, si Hesukristo.
Hindi ba ninyo alam na kayo’y templo ng Diyos at naninirahan sa inyo ang kanyang Espiritu? Parurusahan ng Diyos ang magwasak ng templo niya. Sapagkat banal ang templo ng Diyos, at kayo ang templong iyan.

Juan 2, 13-22
Ang Mabuting Balita ng Panginoon ayon kay San Juan
Malapit na ang Paskuwa ng mga Judio, kaya’t pumunta si Hesus sa Jerusalem. Nakita niya sa templo ang mga nagbibili ng mga baka, mga tupa, at mga kalapati, at ang namamalit ng salapi. Gumawa siya ng isang panghagupit na lubid at ipinagtabuyang palabas ang mangangalakal, pati mga baka at tupa. Isinabong niya ang salapi ng mga namamalit at pinagtataob ang kanilang mga hapag. Sinabi niya sa mga nagbibili ng kalapati, “Alisin ninyo rito ang mga iyan! Huwag ninyong gawing palengke ang bahay ng aking Ama!” Naalala ng kanyang mga alagad na sinasabi sa Kasulatan, “Ang aking malasakit sa iyong bahay ay parang apoy na nag-aalab sa puso ko.”
Dahil dito’y tinanong siya ng mga Judio, “Anong tanda ang maibibigay mo upang patunayang may karapatan kang gawin ito?” Tumugon si Hesus, “Gibain ninyo ang templong ito at muli kong itatayo sa loob ng tatlong araw.” Sinabi ng mga Judio, “Apatnapu’t anim na taon na ginawa ang templong ito, at itatayo mo sa loob lamang ng tatlong araw?”
Ngunit ang templong tinutukoy ni Hesus ay ang kanyang katawan. Kaya’t nang siya’y muling mabuhay, naalaala ng kanyang mga alagad na sinabi niya ito; at naniwala sila sa Kasulatan at sa mga sinabi ni Hesus.

REFLECTION: Today, we celebrate the 1794th Anniversary of the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran, one of the four major Papal basilicas in Rome and the oldest of them all. It was built as a church in 313 by Emperor Saint Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, but it was consecrated as basilica/archbasilica in 324 by Pope Saint Sylvester I. It is entitled: “The Mother and Head of All Churches of the City and of the World.” The Readings for today, based on the Mass Proper of Saints, present to us the formation of the Roman Catholic Church as the structure, the faith, and the community of Christian believers. In the First Reading (Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12), the Prophet Ezekiel tells us today about the visionary temple that flows out water from its right side. This symbolizes the flowing of new life from its source, the Lord God. It prefigures during the Passion of our Lord, wherein after he dies on the cross, the centurion pierces Jesus, the new living temple, at the right side. Because of that, blood and water poured out, at which two sacraments, Baptism and Eucharist, gave life to the Church. It is true what Christ prophesied in our Gospel today (John 2:13-22), that they will destroy him by mocking him, condemning him, scourging him, and crucifying him, and three days after, he will rise again from the dead. The First Temple in Jerusalem was built by King Solomon under the command of the LORD God, wherein the Ark of the Covenant was placed. It was destroyed in the mid-500 B.C.E., during the reign and King Zedekiah, wherein King Nebuchadnezzar of Chaldea and the Chaldeans ransacked Jerusalem and took the people as slaves, which this period was called the Babylonian Captivity. After King Cyrus the Great of Persia releases the Jews from Babylon, they returned to Jerusalem. Under the reign of King Zerubbabel, the Second Temple was built, and during the Roman Occupation, was later modified by the appointed Roman king of Judea, King Herod the Great. This Temple was known for the Presentation of our Lord 40 days after his birth, and the search for him by the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph when he was already 12 years old during the Feast of the Passover. Thirty years later, the Temple became a business market, so Jesus was angry, and he began to cleanse it, symbolizing that the Temple is the house of God the Father. That is the reason why the Second Temple was destroyed in 70 A.D., when Emperor Titus Vespasian and the Romans destroyed Jerusalem. The Temple symbolizes the Church because it is where we can gather to pray to God and to ask for his blessings and guidance on all. Jesus cleansed it because he didn’t want the Church today to be like a market, and he wanted her to continue his teachings based on the whole Scriptures. Moreover, the Temple symbolizes us as the Body of Christ, enabled the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Gospel. We are the community of believers, who continue to spread the teachings of salvation history. That is what Saint Paul tells us in our Second Reading (1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17), that we are the Body of the Christ and the Temple of the Holy Spirit. Since we build up the Church, we should respect the concept of the Roman Catholic Church, especially respecting our bodies and the bodies of others. As we journey down this road, let us show our love and respect for the Church by doing good and avoiding evil, and let us serve the Lord and manifest true faith and worship by serving our brothers and sisters in need.
