Salmo 144, 8-9. 10-11. 12-13ab

Diyos ko at aking Hari, pupurihin kitang lagi.

Pahayag 21, 1-5a

UNANG PAGBASA

Siya ay mabuti at kahit kanino’y hindi nagtatangi;

Magpupuring lahat sa iyo, o Panginoon, ang iyong nilalang;
at ibabalitang tunay kang dakila’t makapangyarihan.

Heralding a new creation

The Passion, death and resurrection of Jesus renews the covenant God made with earth at the very beginning of the biblical narrative. This drama of salvation does not end with just a raising of one man from the dead. It is a drama where a second Eden, the ‘new heaven and new earth’ (Apoc 21:1) will spring up with the arrival of the second Adam.
As we await this second arrival of the second Adam, the Gospel of John suggests that we can see glimmers of what this second Eden will look like. This is done by obeying the Lord’s commandment to love one another; in the same way that Christ the Bridegroom loves the Church to herald the new creation.

Easter is a celebration of victory. Through his Resurrection, Christ conquered the powers of sin and death. Above all, God’s plan of salvation was fulfilled through the obedience of his Son. Because of this, we were given new life, new hope, and a living faith. As we get near to the celebration of the Lord’s Ascension in two weeks, the Readings remind us of how this victory continues to affect our lives from then to now, even until the future.
In the First Reading (Acts 14:21-27), Saints Paul and Barnabas continued proclaiming the Gospel to both Jews and Gentiles alike. And many of them believed in the crucified and risen Lord, and the Christians increased in numbers. This shows that the Good News of salvation is meant for all who believe in the works of God and Jesus, his Son. The Church continues to take part in this missionary work, which composes of a hierarchy from the Pope to the Laity (both the ministries and the faithful).
In the Second Reading (Revelation 21:1-5a), Saint John the Beloved pictures the beatific vision of God, which is a new heaven and new earth. God’s beatific vision is both a place and a state. This is where all the righteous and humble people who lived in faithfulness will inherit eternal life. At the General Judgement, the Risen Christ will come and take them to this most amazing spectacle, where there is no pain, sorrow, suffering, and tears, because he’ll tell them: “Behold, I make all things new” (v.5).
In the Gospel (John 13:31-33a, 34-35), the background is set at the Last Supper. Jesus, who is about to go away from them because he will return to the Father, gives his Apostles final instructions. Because the glory of his Passion, Death, and Resurrection will be revealed, he gives them this new commandment: “Love one another” (v.34). Why is it new? During his time, the Romans ruled Jerusalem under Governor Pontius Pilate of Judea and King Herod Antipas of Galilee. The Sanhedrin ruled the local faith under the High Priests Annas and Caiaphas. Both parties were strict when it comes to the religious and civil laws. But for Jesus, knowing that he is the Messiah, does not treat us, especially the Church, as servants. Rather, he calls us his friends. As an example of humble service, he washed the feet of his Apostles, and he gave up his life on the Cross and rose again from the dead to save us from sin and death. Showing the greatest love which is sacrifice, this crucified and risen Lord commands us to love one another, just as how he loves us. And his love is the ultimate love of God the Father. No matter how we are, and no matter what state/condition we are in, it is always love that conquers above all things.
My dear brothers and sisters, the glory of Jesus’ Resurrection is a victory of love. God who loved the world so much gave his Son to redeem us and restore us who were lost in sin. Those who believe in him are saved. And our Easter faith is challenged when we proclaim and give witness to the Good News of salvation in our everyday lives. This is how we show love for God above all things and love for neighbor like ourselves. And finally after manifesting this virtue of love, we will inherit eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. So as we journey down this Easter road, may this season of great joy enable us to relish the victory of God’s loving plan of salvation and Christ’s Resurrection.
