Biyernes ng Ika-33 Linggo sa Karaniwang Panahon (II)

Pahayag 10, 8-11
Salmo 118, 14. 24. 72. 103. 111. 131

Reflection: In the First Reading (Revelation 10:8-11), Saint John the Apostle sees a vision of an angel telling him to swallow the scroll. So he obeys the command by taking the scroll from the angel’s hand and swallows it. Then he is given the instruction to prophesy about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings. This would strengthen him to continue testifying about his apocalyptic visions written in this last book of the Bible. The Book of Revelation would narrate those visions seen by Saint John, and they show us signs how we should make our present life meaningful in accordance to the divine will. In the Gospel (Luke 19:45-48), we see Jesus as an angry figure, cleansing the Temple for it was turned into a marketplace and a den of thieves. He quotes a passage from the Prophet Isaiah: “For my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples” (Cf. Isaiah 56:7c). Everyday he taught people in the temple area, at which they were amazed with him. Meanwhile, the chief priests did not like what he did because they think he has caused chaos. So they continued to plot against him, seeking also the proper time to carry it out. Bible scholars would comment this certain pericope as justified anger. It is right for Jesus to get angry and cleanse the Temple because it is a place of worship and a house of God. King Solomon built the first Temple, which contained the Ark of the Covenant. But during the Babylonian Captivity, at the time of King Zedekiah, it was destroyed by the Chaldeans, and the Ark was no where to be found. But after the exile, when the Persians allowed the Jews to go back to Jerusalem, Zerubbabel sought a way on how to rebuild the Temple, so he started the project. Finally, the Second Temple was magnified by King Herod the Great during the time of the Roman occupation. It took many men to build the Temple, but it stilled remained that God owns the Temple. That is the same with the Church. We have to respect and take care of it. What does this mean? First, the Church is the physical structure, which refers to the basilicas, cathedrals, shrines, parishes, and chapels. They are houses of prayer and places of worship. So we must respect and give due reverence to God. We should not make any unnecessary actions when we go to these places, especially during the Celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist. Second, the Church is also the People of God, which refers to every human person. We must respect our own life and the lives of other people. God owns our bodies, and our responsibility is to take care of them. As Saint Paul says: “If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy” (Cf. 1 Corinthians 3:17). As we journey down this road, let us show our love for the Church by respecting her, listening to her teachings, partake in the Evangelization of Gospel by proclamation and giving witness, and rendering worship to our Lord.
